Cat loving Mayor opens rescue centre road

MAYOR Margaret Baker was sorely tempted to take home a living souvenir when she opened a new road to a rescue centre.
Mrs Baker, Haywards Heath mayor, lost Jesse, one of her two kittens, when he was struck by a car at about 18 months old.
After cutting a ribbon at the National Cat Centre at Chelwood Gate, north of Haywards Heath, Mrs Baker, who has a kitten Milly, said: "I could have come home with all the kittens. I said to the girls up there I don't know how you work here, I'd want to take them all home. It's an amazing place."
Drivers can now use a new two-way access road from the A275 to the Cats Protection League centre instead of the previous single-track road past houses through the Isle of Thorns.
It took four years of planning and fundraising to build the road.
Cats Protection chief executive Peter Hepburn and Burgess Hill town crier Neil Batsford witnessed the ceremony.
