CYCLIST Daniel Harman is cycling from Steyning to Cape Town, South Africa, to raise money for charity – and he's already in Portugal.
Daniel, of Maudlin Lane, Bramber, set off from Steyning High Street on Saturday, May 3, and has so far cycled more than 2,600 miles.
After entering Portugal via the Spanish province of Galica, Daniel and another cyclist, Enrico, camped in forests before arriving in Porto and seeking refuge at a local fire station.
"We'd been told they would accommodate pilgrims heading on the camino and, with both of us having proof of being on the camino before, we thought there was no harm in asking," said Daniel.
"After a few confused looks, they kindly invited us in for the night and we managed to take a much needed shower after one week of camping 'dirty street dogs', as Enrico had kindly named us."
Daniel then met up with his father, Pete, for a week's holiday from cycling and to get some much needed repairs to his bike after discovering the rear wheel was cracked.
After leaving his father, Daniel rode to Evora and the Chapel of Bones before arriving in the capital, Lisbon.
Daniel is riding solo and unassisted for the 15,000-mile trip to Cape Town.
Despite the cracked wheel rim, he has yet to suffer a puncture.
The 23-year-old embarked on his huge journey in support of FARM-Africa, which helps small-scale farmers in the continent to bring themselves and their communities out of poverty.
Daniel said: "While cycling through Africa, I am going to be keeping to the less busy, more rural roads and, therefore, staying in close contact with the very people for whom I am trying to raise awareness.
"I think that FARM-Africa's work is essential, not only helping this generation by way of donations of livestock and seeds, but also by educating in schools, where children learn about breeding livestock and maintaining sustainable farming techniques, valuable to the future of young African farmers."
